Can I save a duet pending publication?

After I have recorded my contribution to a collab, I like to check it (obviously!).

If I’m not happy with my contribution (often the case!!), I then delete it and try again.

When I think I’ve got it right, I still like to give final checks.... but this time I like to wait quite a while. This is a case where first impressions are not always the best impressions.

Now, during this ‘cooling off’ period, the song is published.

I can see that this might create difficulties for the original creator if my final version is again deleted. Human beings can be delicate creatures. 

There is, I assume, no way to save the final product in a ‘pending’ mode before publication?

Not if you join, no. If you create the collab privately, you can keep it private as long as you like.
