Product Description
iRig PRE Mic Pre for iOS Devices. IK Multimedia has created a solution for integrating any type of microphone with any iOS device, and that solution is the iRig PRE. The iRig PRE gives you ultimate flexibility in mobile recording with your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, allowing you to connect any type of microphone from regular stage dynamic types, to professional studio-quality condensers, giving you an extremely wide range of options. iRig PRE is the first high-quality microphone preamp designed specifically for iOS devices that allows musicians to use their favorite high-quality stage or studio mics with their iOS device. You simply plug-in your favorite microphone directly into the standard XLR connector of iRig PRE with no need for extra cables or adapters. Its adjustable thumbwheel gain control allows the user to easily make precise level settings. The onboard 9V battery provides the necessary voltage for phantom-powered studio condenser microphones allowing up to 15 hours of continuous use. The 3.5mm (1/8") standard stereo headphone output allows monitoring while recording, and the lightweight housing sports a convenient cable for iOS device connection. The iRig PRE also includes a Velcro strip slot for easy mounting on a mic stand or other stage locations. Like all other IK Multimedia microphones, it includes 2 free apps: iRig Recorder (an easy-to-use recording/editing app) and VocaLive (an effects processing app for singers). And like the entire range of iRig accessories, it's highly portable thanks to its pocket-sized form factor for recording anywhere.

Only downsides I’ve discovered after using it for about a month now is, it will give you a lot of interference when the 9v loses about half its juice. You’ll get static or a knocking sound. You’ll lose sound quality at about 50% loss in power on your 9V battery that powers it. Replacing 9v batteries that frequent gets expensive!
If I could wave a magic wand to change a couple of things on the iRig, it would be an option to draw power via a 110 plug or by USB and reserve the battery power if you’re taking your mic to record on the road.
I also wish there was more than an arrow printed on the iRig for the Gain. It’s more of moving the switch to find the right sound.
If you plan on buying this, definitely invest in some rechargeable 9v’s. By the time I decided to get those, I had spent double what the rechargeable batteries cost in replacements. So you’ll be thankful for them.
Other than that, the phantom power sounds SMOOTH!
After doing an interview and bringing in the tracks into the editor, I see the Loudness and clarity was very close between the audio recorded using the Zoom, and the Audio recorded by my iPhone using the iRig PRE with the iRig Rec Premium iPhone Software. They were all recorded with the same XLR cable and Microphone as well to keep it consistent.
There seem to be slats on the back of the unit which allows you to strap this onto something. I am planning to use a Velcro strap and wrap it around my iPhone.
That being said, I would be careful about using this on the field that often because unlike the Zoom which mounts directly to the top of my DSLR, this will have to be either awkwardly strapped to my iPhone which would be mounted on top of my camera, or not be mounted at all and be placed separately on a table or something. If you are doing recordings indoors or for light duty, this is great. This is portable, clean sounding and convenient. But it is not ruggedly built enough to be taken out in the field as the case is not sturdy enough nor is the wire. I would not rely on just this as my primary recording solution.
But for light duty recording for amateurs, studio work, or indoor interviews this is fantastic.
I read the reviews and was praying that mine would be one of the ones that worked. But when it arrived I put the battery in, and oh-no, no lights for power. So I thought that maybe it was just that the lights did not work. I plugged in my Audio Technica lapel mic into my iPhone 6 Plus, opened my Rode Rec app and it worked! I was pleasantly surprised. NO hum, NO hiss, just clean clear audio.
But then something told me check it a little further. I took the battery out and guess what? it works without a battery! I am not an electrical kinda guy, but that was really a surprise to me. Well, I also wanted it to work with my CAD M179, which needs phantom power. But no go. Then I decided that maybe a wire was just loose, and so, while debating about sending it back I thought I'd look before sending it back. After all 50% of what I wanted it to do it did. I took the screw in between the battery contacts and opened it up and I just followed the wires and pried them apart and, well, they were connected. So nothing for me to see here.
I closed the case put the screw in and put the battery in, and -- whoa the light was on! So I plugged in my M179 and it worked perfectly! NO hum, NO hiss, at all. Really clear and absolutely clean sound. I figure the wires might have touched together shorting it out or something, I don't know. What I do know is that it works GREAT!!
Maybe someone can tell me so I could understand why it works without a battery when I use it with my lapel mic that is powered. I dunno, but I am very happy!

Very crystal clear sound recorded on Karoke singing Application.
Only thing need to give DC adaptor to give supply for iRig Device so no need to change battery after use of aporox.10 hrs.
Only use powerfull 9V battary like DURACELL,
not to use cheap battery ,will not get clear sound as require.
I have purchased battery from Amazon as battery is not easily available in shops.
An extra bonus is the provision of a headphone socket so that you can listen to your recordings as you make them. I recommend a decent set of studio "cans" to get the best out of this system, but any standard headphones or earbuds with a 3.5mm plug will do at a pinch.
This preamp uses a standard four-pole 3.5mm connector and also works well on my Samsung Galaxy S2 phone.
