Amazon wish list?! What?! 🤣😆

Maybe she put that in lieu of accepting tips? Because she didn’t have the “tip me” button.

That’s an interesting question … I would hope that tipping someone else wouldn’t automatically opt a person into receiving tips, but I suppose we won’t know unless one of us is brave enough to try it 😂

I’m dying here 🤣 You should send your “badge of benevolence” idea to Smule. They might bring tipping “in house” so that they can give tipping badges, those generous tippers can level up, and Smule can watch the tips pour in. If Smule takes a cut of the tips, it would be like they’re p*mping out their singers.

The thing I wonder is: if you activate the tipping feature purely in order to tip others (not bc you’re asking for tips) will the Tip Me button still appear on your profile? Could they make the Tip Me Button an option? Or could the Tipper opt to have a different sort of badge of benevolence i.e. I’m a Sugar Daddy / Sugar Mama ?

I've put in a question to Smule's helpdesk about this, but my thinking is that one could probably set up tipping on their profile, but only toggle it on when they want to tip someone. So the default could be set to "off" and when they want to tip someone, toggle it to "on", send the tip and then toggle it back to "off." That way the "Tip Me" button is never visible on their profile for much longer than the amount of time it takes for the transaction to go through. So five, ten minutes maybe?

I'm pretty surprised Smule didn't go that way, honestly. But like I said, maybe Smule wanted to fast-track tipping and didn't have the infrastructure in place to handle it all themselves yet. I could see Smule introducing a tipping revamp in a year's time (after they've seen a satisfying increase in VIP memberships), where it's all done in-house, they take a cut of the fees, and they can promote the assurance that users' private information isn't being shared to any third party providers.

This quick and dirty way of getting people onto the app is likely far easier than Smule spending time and resources developing their own crypto currency like "Smoolah."*

*Someone on Singtopia came up with that. I'm not taking credit for it at all.

“Smoolah” 😆🤣🙌🏽 clever.

The toggle on & off button is a good idea & makes sense if it works the way you are guessing it does…To be able to turn off the Tip Me button on profile but still be able to tip when tipper wants to.

I think another concern for  folks (esp. women) is they don’t necessarily want other Smulers to know their private info such as Venmo username. Concern about stalkers which was mentioned in this chat.

Yes, and it really shouldn't be understated. The amount of harassment I hear women receive on a daily basis on Smule is staggering. Some people have said they've set up new email addresses and bogus locations specifically not to hand out information to anyone who sends them a nickel.

I just found out that Smule actually used to have a virtually currency called Smoola, back when users had to buy songs or something. Crazy.

The Minty Clinch

I’ve often wondered why it’s called smule, but never enough to find out. It’s an unpleasant word to me. I don’t even like saying it.

Oh! I didn’t know it was called “Smoola”, but I’ve been around long enough to remember when users could use coins (from watching ads, if I recall) to purchase songs they could open without having vip. But I believe Apple banned that practice, which is why Smule removed it.

I had also heard people say "Smule" was a combination of the words smile and music, which makes more sense than...whatever that Isaac Asimov thing is about.

This is what I thought, too. Smile + Music = Smule

I’ve also been around long enough to remember doing that very thing when I didn’t have VIP (watching videos to be able to post OCs) and I also didn’t know it was called Smoola. I wonder why Apple banned the practice? I still watch ads on other apps to be able to play some video games and such. Isn’t that the same thing? Was it something to do with Smule having its own currency? I mean is that somehow wrong? 🤔 Was Smoola the evil currency by which the Sonic Mule would disrupt financial systems and build its empire?! 🫣😆 (serious questions except the last one.)

@SingingFool I’m not 100% sure on the reasoning for removing “Smoola” from circulation. I’m pretty sure i remember Smule blaming it on Apple policy, though. It never made sense to me, either, as I also played games that allowed watching ads for in-game help. Maybe it is what you said? The last one, the answer is yes.

Maybe the Smoola was different from ad viewing -earned “currency” on video games because the revenue Smule gained was connected to the use of songs (which are under a copyright/licensing contracts)? Some kind of violation of whatever contract Smule has with the recording artists/ companies? That might be why tipping goes directly to users with Smule making it absolutely clear that they make no additional profit from the tipping transaction. Similarly, I was wondering why Smule moved the gifts 🎁👍🏽away from the duet and onto our individual profiles. Maybe it is also to distance what profit (smule is making from gift-giving) away from the songs & only visible to you on the “About” part of your profile. Sorta hidden. 🤔

Yeah, moving the gifts to where you have to go through several steps to find them, didn’t make much sense. This might make slightly more sense. Lol
