  • Smule adds personal playlists

After the endless back and forth regarding the profile layout, Smule has finally added a feature that has been requested for years: Playlists. So far, the only way to group your favorite recordings was the Favorites feature. But for many Smule users it wasn’t sufficient. There was no way to create multiple lists or change any privacy options. When you added a song as a favorite, all collaborators were always notified. And many users were even hitting the limit of songs you can mark as favorite, so it became impossible to add more collabs. But now you can finally create and manage multiple playlists with custom privacy options!

Smule playlists can contain all content types: OCs, solos, duets and group songs. Once you have opened a Smule performance, click the ‘three dots’ menu and select ‘Add to Playlist’. You can either use an existing playlist or create a new one. Your favorites are still there as the default playlist. But now you add many more playlists. So far, the only customization option is the title. You can give your playlist any name that you like. The cover image is taken from the first song and there doesn’t seem to be an option to change the order of the songs in the playlist.

Playlists can be private or public and you can switch at any time between the two options. So you can finally add collabs to a playlist that no one else can see but you! Yes!

Here are a few ideas for playlists:

    • Songs grouped by music genre (e.g. musical, hard-rock)
    • Songs grouped by language
    • Songs grouped by type (e.g. all group songs)
    • Songs from a specific group
    • Songs with a specific duet partner
    • Songs grouped by playback occasion (e.g. ‘jogging’, ‘dinner music’)
    • Songs grouped by presentation style (e.g. cosplay)

What kind of playlists will you create? Let us know in the comments!

Yes, they always add the stuff they never promise lol. Where is the new enhanced inbox and logout button they promised in 2020? :(

Looking forward to getting this update!

I know exactly what kind of list I'll add first. I often stumble acoss expired OCs that are still possible to join but can't be bookmarked because they have expired. In order to remember them--and have easy access to them--when I get time to join, without the other Smuler noticing, I'll add them to a "Maybe join list". At them moment I keep such a list in a note on my iPhone, completely separate from the app. Very tedious.

Also, I will probably create at least one list with collabs that I personally didn't have anything to do with. At the moment, all that's visible next to a collab is the one who created the OC and how many more people joined (in the list view--in the grid view I don't think you see any usernames at all). So I can't immediately tell if I was the one who joined or not. But if I add all collabs that don't contain me to a separate list, I'll easier identify them.

Last but not least, I'd love to get easy and automatic access to all collabs with a specific duet partner from that user's profile page. I mean, when I go to someone's profile, I'd love to be able to just click on a link to get a list of everything I've sung with them. That would be fantastic!

I like that now I can finally listen to a range of songs from my fav "smule couples" without having to search for them individually.

This is a fantastic new feature.

That said, it would be great to to be able to either “auto sort” playlists (alphanumerical) or manually sort playlists by dragging them up/down. Currently playlists are sorted in the order they are created. Works ok if one has only 4-5 playlists. But with 10-20 playlists (or more) managing these become quite a pain. Please do consider adding a sort feature.

A further “nice to have” addition would be to sort songs within a playlist (either by date of creation, or manual edit/drag).

    thanks for considering 🙏

Does anyone know the answers to the following questions?…

    1. What is the maximum number of Playlists a Smule VIP may create on their channel?
    2. What is the maximum number of songs each Playlist may contain?

    Thank You!

    Apparently, it’s unlimited.
