  • Smule launches Gift feature

Smule just launched a new feature on the app called “gifts” and with that a new payment options called “coins”. As Smule puts it, “Gifts are the newest, most expressive way to show your appreciation for the performances you love”.

    stickers.jpg

Gifts are essentially animated little stickers you can send to someone if you like their performance and you can also add a personal message along with most gifts. The feature is more personal and more prominent than the previous options of liking and commenting songs. While like and comments are public and can be left by anyone, gifts are a paid and personal option. While performances show the number of received gifts, the gift itself, the people giving them and their messages are only visible for the singers receiving the gifts. For this a new tab on the Activity section of the app was added.

    paying.jpg

To send most gifts you need to buy coins in advance. Coins are essentially a virtual currency that only exists within the Smule service. The gift prices vary greatly, so one can spend a few cents per gift or well over US$ 40 for the most expensive one. Smule makes it clear in their terms of service that the coins are not a real currency. The purchase of coins is not refundable, the value of the coins may change at any time and the coin service might be changed or stopped. But the coin service is probably here to stay and could easily be extended to other features like paid video/audio filters.

Currently Smule hasn’t officially announce the gift service or updated their help and FAQ sections with more details. We will extend this article when more information emerges.

Feel free to comment below to tell us how you like the new feature.

I’m agree with The__gambler. We are already paying a subscription and they want we spend real money to buy imaginary gifts to send to people that some of them may not even care or maybe some of them expects you return the gift and if you don’t do it they could angry. Bad vibrations.

Yes, The__Gambler, the app is called Starmaker. I had forgotten the name when I stated on a previous thread there is another karaoke app that has the gift feature. I figure it may be Smule’s way of competing.

_Joe_Church_, at first I thought it was a nice addition, but I think you’re probably onto something. People are starving in the world, and I purchased imaginary gifts. Ugh. But I and others who have done it mean well. And you are so right about possibly causing strifes. There is so much immaturity from some adult users I can see them getting upset if they don’t get a gift or even one of the nicer gifts. Can’t win sometimes! I think Smule has good intentions, but also trying to make some extra money.

I was thinking about the gift feature. I have a great idea. Smule should allocate so many free coins to purchase gifts each day to VIP users when they log in since we already paid for a subscription. A lot of the gifts are ridiculously expensive.

Agreed to all the above. In addition, whenever a "currency" is implemented into ANY game or app there will soon follow ways to exploit (hack) it to the detriment of honest users as well as to the company.  Think about that, Smule.

    Kathryn,

I am sure there are certifiable hackers on the Smule app (and other apps), but there are legal limitations. I am sure it is illegal to hack someone just because they can, doesn’t mean that will stop them. Keep your account as secure as possible. Remember you don’t owe any users your personal information. No one needs to know anything about you, and if they’re on the app to sing, they’ll have no problem with it.

It’s a tacky idea they’ve copied from StarMaker to make some quick bucks.

I’ve been on Smule now for nearly 4 years and am really beginning to question the direction it’s going. The algorithms appear to be so biased to promote influencers and certain songs that no one else gets a look-in. The selected or trending songs are ones going back 2-3 years, and many of the trending singers haven’t been active on the app for months which makes me totally question what the point of it is.

The live jams are also just an awkward mess!

I still don’t really understand what the Groups functionality has actually added to the mix.

    And now, gifts!

I’ve got so many positive things out of Smule, but I’m also rather frustrated by it now!

    Sorry for venting! Lol

And yes, the company is vulnerable, as well. Agree!

    Scrapfree,

Your “vent” is useful. Smule or any company should pay attention to all feedback, even if it isn’t what they want to hear.

Smule sent me a survey, and one of the questions was about the gifts before the feature was released. I relayed I didn’t think it was a necessary feature, but I use it since it’s here but not much.

I play on another app (not a karaoke app), but the app doesn’t charge for a subscription, and in order to *succeed* on the app, a user has to pay for coins, and the app grants users 500 free coins a day. That app makes big money without the subscriptions. I wish Smule would allow users so many coins per day free of charge. The least the app could do since we pay for a subscription.

The Live Jam can be awkward, depending on who you’re jamming with. Some jammers are rude. 🤭 Truth! 🤷🏻‍♀️And  I love children, but they flood the jams. I can’t wait until school starts back. 😂 I am happy they enjoy the jams, though. The lag gives me a headache at times and having to adjust vocals is a pain, but the lag is something that can’t be helped. I have to be in the jamming mood for the Live Jams. 😃

    Thanks for the reply.

yeah, I think you’re right about kids on Livejam. I was on them today and one guy had in his title, ‘won’t sing with under 16s, but welcome to listen’. Then a kid came on and he told him he couldn’t sing with him, which was awkward.

I see both sides. It’s good that kids want to be on there, but it would seem a better (and safer) option all round to have some kind of ‘SmuleKids’ area for under a certain age.

i don't understand the point. if there are some gifts you can send for free, why would anyone buy the coins for gifts that cost money when they have essentially no value at all? they don't give users any reward for having received the gifts. it's frustrating that smule will add useless features like this while Android users still go without a lot of the features that apple users have on the app. want to improve the app? make it so that i can use my android phone instead of my 10-year-old ipod.

    gifts have absolutely no purpose.

It’s happening what I said. Some people send you valued gifts expecting you send back to them, if you don’t send back they can be angry but you cannot send back because you’re not a millionaire 😆 This feature will kill the community with the pass of time. At the end you don’t want to sing because you don’t want to receive gifts that if you don’t return the people will get angry. I’m going to put in my profile “PLEASE DONT SEND ME VALUED GIFTS” 😆 but people don’t want to appear as a poor guy that cannot give valued gifts.

And, in adding to that, what you say... receiving or giving gifts don’t give to you any advantage or benefit. It’s a completely annoying features that will kill Smule.

You may be right with some of your points. Pretty sad. I would hate to think users feel obligated to send a pricey gift just because they received one. Gift giving should be genuine, and if it isn’t, then it shouldn’t be done at all. This is an app, and, once again, apparently, some users are taking it too seriously. 🙄

It’s happening my friend. And the other is the groups, people that is retired or have a lot of time making pressure to put hearts or do group activities without having in count that some of us we have to work or do other activities.

I don’t have time for group activities, only to join the occasional group songs, and I am not worrying about doing anything more. I don’t belong to those types of groups. I use the app the way I want to use it, so groups may as well get over it if they try pressuring me. It ain’t happening. 😂 I suggest you follow my lead.

    Happy Singing!

Hehe in reality is a little joke. I’ve not too much problem with the pricey gifts because I don’t receive a very lot but for some people that receive lots of this kind can be a problem.

I forgot to mention something. There are ways to get coins without purchasing them. Users can win coins. I won 1000 coins five weeks in a row with the “Rate The Song” feature. That’s one way I was able to give nice gifts, and it’s really fun. So not everyone who gives the costly gifts are millionaires. 🤣🤣

All joking aside, I understand where you’re coming from, too.

Would be cool if the coin value of the gifts were then credited to the giftee as in-app currency they could apply to their subscription, or Smule apparel, or whatever else in the app.

Actually make the coined gifts have a value to the giftee beyond just kudos.

They added Halloween gift options, prior to October 31st this year.  I thought it was cool enough and sent halloween gifts to some halloween themed songs.

I logged in on October 31st just to give out Halloween giftsl and they had already removed them as options???

You made me laugh with the “insert face palm here.” 😂 Yes, I am getting a little ticked off over the delay of Thanksgiving gifts. I had a few turkeys I wanted to send. 😉😂 Smule will probably skip right to Christmas just as other companies. SMH!

I think it’s a free one, so maybe ask someone who doesn’t pay for gifts to send you one. I am sure they won’t mind.

No one is going to like my opinion about the gift feature. Truth is not always popular or accepted, but if you spend money for gifts, I have noticed you don’t have access to the pretty freebies; therefore, you have to purchase the nicer ones. And Smule is not the only app that does it. The apps are formulated to know who spends! Actually once you download an app, they pretty much own you on the app! No privacy! A little off topic but needs to be addressed. I am not spending anymore on gifts after I use the rest of this last bundle. Everyone will get the freebies offered from me!
